What Riverdale Has Taught Me About Community
Riverdale on the outside is a small town with a classic feel—Pops the soda shop, football, and legacy. A history rooted in the divide of North and South side. The city kids and the Serpents—a gang from the South side. This divide has been passed down from generation to generation. That brings us to the Riverdale of today with Archie, Jughead, Betty, Veronica, and the whole gang. This show is not all milkshakes and pep rallies.
Mystery, deception, and loyalty are the threads that make the friendships between the core four inspirational. Community does not give up no matter how bad or horrible a season is. In season three of the fan favorite show, Betty Cooper’s family is put to the test in more ways than one. It all comes to an end with a life-altering discovery that destroys everything they have ever known.
In the search for the “Black Hood,” the Northsiders and the Southside Serpents collide—not for ordinary conflict, but for a good reason. To figure out what is going on, Jughead’s Serpents and the football team supporting Archie take on the mystery. When Betty finds out the truth about her family, the community circles around her again. Their friendship is tested as they search for the person who is responsible for killing people in the name of cleansing sins while standing by the girl who feels like she is the reason for it all. Through it all, they stand linked even in weakness.
That is community. We are made for friendship and when push comes to shove the most unlikely of people can circle around and come together for what is right and good. True friendship is built on love, trust, and the belief that even if someone has messed up they should be given a second chance. True friends forgive when wrong has been done and offer support in good times and in bad.
Riverdale is a twisted town—a fun teen drama show—but it is the commitment to friends and family that set this show apart beyond the screen. Community is what we all desire. The fictional twisted town of Riverdale is a reminder that friendship is one of the strongest forces in the world, and it is a gift to have friends that are closer than a brother.
Riverdale is based off the beloved Archie comic series and is on the CW on Wednesdays at 7 PM CST.
